Vision Nissan of Canandaigua - Nissan Ambition 2030

Nissan is progressing along nicely on its transformative journey to establish a comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) lineup in Europe. In a pledge to align with regulatory requirements and worldwide trends, the company declared in September 2023 its steadfast commitment to achieving a complete transition to 100 percent electric vehicles in Europe by 2030. This signifies that all new Nissan models introduced in the region will be exclusively electric. This announcement not only reaffirms the company’s manufacturing objectives in accordance with global net-zero initiatives but also underscores the significant influence of international neutrality efforts in shaping the priorities of automotive manufacturers.

With its established capability to create and build vehicles in the United Kingdom, along with its expertise in crossover vehicles and electric technology, Nissan is committed to achieving carbon neutrality. Nissan’s President and CEO, Makoto Uchida, stated that electric vehicles (EVs) are the ultimate solution for mobility, with over a million customers already enjoying Nissan’s electric vehicles. Uchida emphasized that there’s no turning back now. Nissan’s path to carbon neutrality hinges on electric vehicles powered by renewable energy, aligning with the automaker’s Ambition 2030 vision.

Nissan’s strong commitment aligns with some significant milestones for its European Design and Research and Development (R&D) teams, as they continue their innovative work on cutting-edge technology and future vehicles. For instance, in celebration of Nissan Design Europe’s 20th anniversary, the company unveiled the Concept 20-23, an urban electric vehicle concept located near Nissan Design Europe (NDE) in Paddington, London. Meanwhile, at the Nissan Technical Center Europe (NTCE), which is marking its 35th anniversary in 2023, the United Kingdom is hosting a new real-world autonomous driving study called evolvAD. This study is concentrated on residential and rural roads and is supported by the UK government.

Nissan stressed that these initiatives are part of an ongoing investment program that surpasses $42.4 million across both sites. This program encompasses improvements in design tools, resources, building facilities, additional staff at Nissan Design Europe, as well as the introduction of new facilities and technology.

Under the Ambition 2030 plan, the brand is introducing 27 electrified vehicles worldwide, which include 19 pure electric vehicles, by 2030. During this timeframe, the company is also implementing cobalt-free technology to reduce electric vehicle battery costs by 65 percent by the 2028 fiscal year. The company’s ambition extends to launching electric vehicles equipped with solid-state batteries by the 2028 model year. This introduction of solid-state battery technology will enable Nissan to improve performance and expand its electric vehicle range.

Notably, official statements suggest that solid-state batteries will not only decrease charging times by one-third but also enhance electric vehicle efficiency and accessibility. Additionally, Nissan expects solid-state batteries to lower the cost of battery packs to $75 per kilowatt-hour by 2028. Moreover, two upcoming Nissan electric vehicles have been confirmed for Europe. One is a compact electric vehicle that will replace the iconic Nissan Micra as the entry-level vehicle in the lineup. The other will be manufactured at Nissan’s innovative plant in Sunderland, United Kingdom.
